 Disability Office

Social Security and SSI cover a lot of people, but what about the people that are temporarily or permanently disabled? Sure, they may qualify for SSI, but what defines a "disability"?

For this activity, I want you to examine all of the data below, and respond to the following needs, found in red. On a separate sheet of paper, you can simply "answer their questions". Remember, this is just Part 1 of the activity, with more of the "fun stuff" coming next class period.

"A Guy Walks Into a Disability Office, and Asks..."

  • I recently broke my arm in a work-related accident. My friend told me about "disability insurance". Is that a thing? I just want some basic information on "disability insurance". Just a quick overview...
  • I have a young child at home who was born with Cerebral Palsy. His medical bills are very high, and my wife and I work extra hard to help pay them, although it's never enough. Can you help me? We're just not sure if he's sick enough or if we even qualify. Is this illness even a "disability" and are there programs for us?
  • Look, I'd love to work, but with this disability, I just can't find a job. Is there a program that helps people find jobs, especially those who have been injured on the job?
