The Absolute Monarch

Comparing and Contrasting the
Absolute Monarchs of Europe, 1550 - 1700,
through a "Stock Market" Simulation

From the end of the Sixteenth Century to the beginnings of the Eighteenth, Europe found itself under the capable control of the Absolute Monarchs. With unchecked power, sourced by the Divine itself, these monarchs ruled with a dictator's fist: benevolent on one side of the political spectrum, and tyrannical, on the other side.

But who was best? To use a "stock market" metaphor, whose stock is on the rise and whose just a few clicks away from being junk bond status?

We've mentioned Louis XIV, but he's easy! He's the Berkshire Hathaway of the stock market game! (Side note: Berkshire Hathaway, owned by billionaire Warren Buffet, sells for over $200,000 a share!) So, we're going to evaluate the "stocks" of four (4) other "absolute" monarchs:

  1. King Phillip V of Spain,
  2. King James I of England,
  3. King Frederick William of Prussia, and/or
  4. Empress Maria Theresa of Austria

Click on the images below to access the "market watch pages" of these monarchs. While you're reading, see examine the 1) history of the stock, its 2) current investment health, and its 3) predictive future. See if you can rank these monarchs against the "Louisian" alignment, but also remember that it's best to "buy low, and sell high!": you want to "make money over time", and not necessarily "buy" the most successful monarch right now. For example, maybe Phillip isn't great right now, but you're gonna "buy" him anyway in the hopes that he'll improve!

Good luck!
